In this episode, we kick off a brand-new term, and with it, the race is on! Students across Queensland are gearing up for their final submissions for the DATTA QLD Student Subject Awards for 2024. Or at least, that’s what we hope. In reality, it’s often a matter of setting consistent reminders: “Have you got it done yet? Have you got it done yet?” If you have, maybe now is the time to send it to me!

To celebrate our race, I have enlisted one sensational young design student, Eleanor Lewis. Eleanor is the winner of the United States’ 2023 National High School Design Competition, hosted by Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. She attends a specialized design high school, where she had to compete for entry and is expected to put in extra hours each day. Her dedication and talent are truly inspiring.

Join us as we explore Cooper Hewitt and dive into the world of design with Eleanor. She is simply spectacular, and I was fortunate enough to spend a few hours with her discussing her journey and achievements.

Don’t forget, the deadline for entries to the DATTA Student Subject Awards is Friday, 30th August. Make sure to get your submissions in on time!

Listen to the full episode now and be inspired by Eleanor’s story and insights.

About the Bridge Building Podcast

“This is the place where we dissect and then discover the many ways ITD teachers all over this country are using their passion to create passionate students. We talk of measuring and manipulating a multitude of materials of design and divergent thought, of creation with our minds and with our hands. And most of all, we talk of growing great young people because of course that is what we do.”

So what does that mean other than I like to show off my alliteration skills? Since coming back to teaching a few years ago the thing that strikes me most, and frankly scared me most is how lonely this job is. How little we know about what is happening in our subject area. The classroom next door, a class in the next school, let alone the next town are a mystery to me. I know there are teachers out there doing incredible things and this (the podcast) is a way for me to find out and be inspired. I would like to invite you along to listen and learn, to be inspired by some of the sensational teachers I speak to on the “Bridge Building Podcast – from technology to the trades”
