How long have you been a Design and Technology teacher and what schools have you worked in?
I graduated in 1990 and taught for two years before transitioning to the private sector. For over two decades, I worked in and owned various small businesses, gaining valuable real-world experience. In 2017, I made the decision to return to education, reigniting my passion for teaching. Currently, I serve as a Teacher and Subject Area Co-ordinator at Nanango State High School, a position I will hold until the end of this year. This blend of educational and entrepreneurial experience has uniquely shaped my approach to teaching Design and Technology.
What inspired you to become a Design and Technology teacher?
My initial inspiration to become a teacher is a distant memory, but my return to education in 2017 was sparked by a pivotal conversation in 2015. While discussing the future of education with a mentor, I expressed my concern that we weren’t teaching young people effectively, though I wasn’t sure what the ideal approach should be. My mentor’s response was eye-opening: “There’s nothing you can do from the outside.” This statement galvanized me into action. Realising that to make a meaningful impact, I needed to be directly involved in education, I decided to upgrade my qualifications and return to teaching. This time, I was driven by a desire to innovate and improve the educational experience for students in Design and Technology.
what is your most memorable or proudest moment from your teaching career?
Throughout my teaching career, I have been consistently inspired by students who demonstrate exceptional growth or creativity, making our efforts feel truly worthwhile. However, a particularly memorable moment occurred this year, highlighting the impact of mentorship and the power of embracing new teaching methods. A teacher I had been supporting through the ITD Teachers pathway program invited me to his classroom. He proudly showcased the work of two of his students, then shared a candid reflection: “You know, I initially thought you were full of it. I didn’t sign up for this design stuff, but now I realise it’s so much fun.” This experience was profoundly rewarding, as it demonstrated not only the positive influence on students but also the transformation of a fellow educator’s perspective on design-based learning.
What resources or advice do you recommend or have to help Design and Technology teachers deliver high-quality, engaging, and effective education to their students?
Change something about what you are doing every time you do it, then look back and ask yourself was that a good change?
What do you enjoy about being involved as a committee member with DATTA Qld?
As the host of the DATTA Queensland Podcast, I have the opportunity to speak with and gain insights from some of the most innovative educators in our field.
What advice would you give to someone considering joining the DATTA Qld committee? Why should they volunteer their time?
Do it, your subject area needs you.
What hobbies, creative outlets, or pastimes do you enjoy in your free time?
I prefer to stay busy, but I do enjoy several activities in my free time: wood turning, water skiing, camping, home renovations, and cycling. I’m also a massive Elon Musk fan.
As I write this, I am on a 3-day break during an epic cycling holiday. We have completed the first leg from Amsterdam to Bruges and the second from Venice to Croatia. Tomorrow, we head off to Sardinia for the third leg. This adventure combines my love for cycling with travel.
